| Solar
Lantern FAQ’s |
| |
|
How did the idea of the solar lantern first came about? |
| Before the project started evidence of the need for a Solar Lanterns
was emerging from a number of sources. Studies involving the energy
needs of poor people in developing countries, pointed to the need
for de-centralised local solutions which take advantage of renewable
energy sources and are affordable. Another major, study by the World
Bank identified the need and demand for reliable Solar Rechargeable
Lanterns in Sub-Saharan Africa as an accessible and inexpensive solar
home system as a means of providing house hold lighting, too many
more people. |
| |
|
Are the spare parts (e.g. the bulbs and batteries) readily available?
|
| All the components have carefully been selected great emphasise
being laid upon the availability of parts. Where we have been guided
by our manufacturing partners overseas. We have also had to bear in
mind however that the market for such components is changing rapidly.
As a result we have been careful not to choose components that are
available now but may not be available in a few years time. Accessories
bulbs, LED etc are available to order directly from the website. |
| |
|
How does this compare with average expenditure on kerosene or batteries? |
| The current cost of a Solar Home System (comprising of a Solar Panel,
a battery, charge controller and a system of lights) that could be
wired into a home, would cost at least £250. An amount that
would be obviously out of the reach of most rural families in most
developing Nation. This is where Sunrise Development in partnership
its manufactures have come with ingenuity designed as an affordable
alternative ‘lighting for life’ with our unbeatable Light
for Life solutions, Solar home system which meet all the needs of
the rural families in the developing nations and retails at approximately
between $45 -$60 based upon the import duty of the country. |
| |
|
Will there be a problem with initial capital cost? |
| Unlike kerosene or batteries, that demand repeat purchases, our
products are a one time expense. A study on spending habits of families
in developing nation looked at Africa in particular and found that
£4 - 5 (approx $10-12) per month is spent on kerosene, candles
and dry cell batteries which are of inferior quality light quality
compared to the products on offer. |
| |
|
Where are the lamps sold? |
| The lanterns can be purchased online through outlets for Solar Products
and other household goods. Exhibitions offering a discounted promotional
fee for the lanterns purchased through our direct sales team would
be another avenue. Suppliers will have a network of outlets such as
hardware stores, petrol stations and battery service depots.
We are cognisant of the fact that even with this well thought and
structured network our target audience may not be fully reached
especially those in the rural area, and that is why there is intensified
work to implement a marketing strategy that will employ all available
methodology to reach our esteemed rural agents or travelling salesmen
to help penetrate every facet of the community with the Solar Products
bringing light into rural areas at village level.
|
| |
|
Are solar lanterns a new invention, or are they used anywhere else
in the world? If so, what modifications / improvements have you made? |
| With the increased awareness of global warming effects, any environmentally
friendly innovation is warmly welcome and continues to be highly researched.
Fortunately, Solar lighting falls into this category and therefore
the products are not at all a new idea’ many companies have
produced them most of which have been designed for the leisure market
with a few made to withstand the harsh environmental conditions to
be found in many developing nations as for example our solar lantern
products.
Most solar lanterns in the market boosting to offer products with
poor design and the use poor quality components as a means of cutting
costs.
Our products are designed to meet the requirement for a reliable
and dependable source of light. We strongly believe that we have
arrived at designs that are robust, simple to both use and maintain.
Above all a highly quality product guarantees longevity and satisfaction.
|
| |
|
How long will the lantern run for when it is fully charged? |
| On a full charge the lantern will give light for 6 - 8 hours to
meet our client’s needs. If the lantern is used to power/recharge
mobile phones will mean a shorter/reduced time however, ensuring a
full charged mobile. a small radio without the lamp 15 hours listening
time is to be expected. |
| |
|
Will it work even on a cloudy day? |
| Photo voltaic panels may be used to provide charge even when there
is cloud cover so the lantern ensuring continuity even on a cloudy
day. Of course the charge duration time may be slightly longer then. |
